Matthew Dubuisson

In 2017, I graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) with a double major in biochemistry and molecular biology. During my undergraduate education, I worked towards designing a new type of assay for measuring conformational changes in 4-way (Holliday) DNA junctions without the use of radioactive P-32 to develop the precursor to a new type of antibiotic. Following graduation, I attended the University of Mississippi Medical Center and obtained my master’s in biomedical sciences in 2019. It was during this time that I started working with zebrafish, and I began learning about the Endocannabinoid system. Under the guidance of Dr. Gibert, this research led to the discovery of two novel drug compounds that could be used to treat a disease they were not originally designed for and two utility patents. I am now a fourth-year graduate student in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. I joined the laboratory of Dr. Yann Gibert in August 2020. My current research project focuses on studying the interactions of endocrine-disrupting chemicals on the endocannabinoid system, and their effects on osteoblasts during bone development in a developmental biology model. Following graduation, I plan on pursuing a postdoctoral research fellowship in academia. My long-term career goal is to use my knowledge of the endocannabinoid system to develop novel drug treatments.
